Today, we came together as a community at BattleGrounds Fitness to take on the Hero WOD “Chad.” This workout is dedicated to Navy SEAL Chad Wilkinson, who tragically lost his battle with PTSD. It’s a workout designed to be tough and grueling, but it’s also deeply symbolic. The 1,000 box step-ups with a 40-lb ruck or vest represent the mental and physical endurance required by our veterans—not just during their service but in the battles they continue to face long after returning home.
A Tribute to Our Veterans
Last year, I attempted “Chad” on Veterans Day and only completed 670 reps in 45 minutes, wearing a 20-lb vest for part of it. This year, I started with a 40-lb vest for the first 100 reps and then continued without it, determined to finish the full 1,000 reps. It wasn’t easy, but once I found my rhythm, I pushed through. The key was to get into a groove, break it down into manageable sets, and keep moving forward. I finished in 57 minutes and 34 seconds, grateful for the strength I felt today.
The workout isn’t just a physical challenge—it’s a mental one too. Around rep 700, I found myself reflecting on the repetitive, almost meditative nature of the movement. It’s boring, it’s monotonous, and that’s the point. It mirrors the daily struggle many veterans face with PTSD and mental health. It forces you to confront your own thoughts and find a way to push through the discomfort. It was a powerful reminder of the hidden wounds many of us carry.
Honoring Service and Sacrifice
For both Rocky and me, as veterans ourselves, today’s workout held a special significance. It was incredible to see so many of our members show up, determined to complete this tough workout in honor of those who have served. There’s a unique sense of camaraderie that comes with sharing this experience—pushing through together, supporting each other, and remembering why we’re doing it. The gym was buzzing with energy, and it felt like a true celebration of community and resilience as members pushed through and finished the full 1k reps.
As I pushed thought the workout, it reminded me of the many times I’ve struggled with my own demons—the PTSD, the survivor’s guilt, the memories of near-misses and close calls in Iraq. Completing this workout today was a small way to honor not just Chad but all those we’ve lost, including my friend Dave, Sgt. Winberg, and many others who didn’t make it home or who lost their battles long after the war ended.
Building Bonds and Community
While today was about honoring our veterans through the Hero WOD, we also wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible event we hosted last weekend—the Battle Buddy Brawl. It was such a great competition, and it was a huge success! We saw an amazing turnout of athletes who brought their A-game, showing strength, grit, and determination across every event.
The energy was electric from start to finish, with teams cheering each other on, pushing through tough workouts, and celebrating every victory. It was particularly special to see so many veterans competing and supporting each other, a testament to the strong veteran community we have here at BattleGrounds. Rocky and I had the chance to a few new veterans who came out to participate. It’s events like these that remind us why we started this gym—to create a space where people can push their limits, build lasting bonds, and feel supported every step of the way.
A huge thank you to our sponsors, two of which are veteran-owned businesses. Your support helped make the Battle Buddy Brawl possible, and we’re incredibly grateful for your contributions. The event was a celebration of fitness, friendship, and community, and we couldn’t have done it without you.
Happy Birthday, Marine Corps!
This week wasn’t just about Veterans Day; we also celebrated the Marine Corps Birthday—249 years of proud tradition, honor, and brotherhood. I’ve had the privilege of attending many Marine Corps Balls over the years, and each one is special in its own way. It’s a time to come together, remember our shared history, and celebrate the bonds that never fade, no matter how long it’s been since we wore the uniform.
It was fantastic to see so many Marines at the local ball this year, including some past and current members of BattleGrounds Fitness. There’s something unique about the Marine Corps that stays with you, even if you’ve transitioned to a new branch or career. While I’ve enjoyed my time in the Virginia Army National Guard and have met many incredible people, the Marines will always be my people. The camaraderie, the spirit, and the brotherhood are unlike anything else, and it was a privilege to share that tradition once again. Once a Marine, Always a Marine.
A Thank You to Our Community
As we wrap up this Veterans Day, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out to the gym today, competed in the Battle Buddy Brawl, or supported our veterans in any way this week. You are the reason our community is so strong. It’s not just about the workouts or the competitions; it’s about the connections we make and the support we give each other, both inside and outside the gym.
To our veteran members and friends, thank you for your service. We honor your sacrifices and the challenges you’ve faced. Whether you’re struggling with hidden wounds or just looking for a place to belong, know that you have a community here at BattleGrounds Fitness that stands with you.
Happy Veterans Day, and a very Happy Birthday to the United States Marine Corps! Semper Fi, and thank you to all who have served. Let’s continue to show up for each other, push our limits, and honor those who can no longer be with us.
