Between Christmas and New Year’s: Myths, Truths, and the Power of Community

So, it’s December 30th. The confusing and cozy in-between of Christmas and New Year’s, it’s the perfect time to reflect. The festivities of Christmas are still fresh, and the anticipation of a new year is buzzing. This stretch often feels like a blur—a mix of indulgence, relaxation, and a little guilt about skipped workouts or extra servings of dessert. And many of us are feeling the effects of stepping away from some of our routines (fitness/food). I gave IF a break for a few days as it was simply too hard to stay on my strict 5 hour schedule for a few of the days. I’m happily back on target today!

But here’s the truth: It’s not what you eat or do between Christmas and New Year’s that matters, but what you eat or do between New Year’s and Christmas that does.  I actually saw a version of this as a meme (to the right) and it struck a chord with me recently, reminding me that the habits we cultivate throughout the year hold far more weight than any fleeting indulgence during this short span.

At BattleGrounds Fitness, our edge has always been about community and accountability. Those are the secret weapons that help our members not only navigate this in-between time but build strength and resilience for the entire year.

Let’s debunk some common fitness myths and reflect on how staying connected can keep you on track, no matter the season.

Myth #1: “You’ll gain 10 pounds over the holidays.”

The Truth: Studies show that the average weight gain during the holidays is only about one pound. Yes, just one. But here’s the kicker: most people don’t lose that pound after the holidays, which is how gradual weight gain occurs over years.

How We Combat It: At BattleGrounds, we encourage mindful indulgence. Enjoy your grandma’s famous cookies or that slice of pie at your holiday party, but don’t let one treat derail your goals. When you’re part of a supportive community, it’s easier to bounce back the next day with a good workout and nourishing meals—because we’re all in this together.

Myth #2: “You need to work out every day to stay on track.”

The Truth: Recovery and rest are as essential as the workouts themselves. Consistency is more important than perfection.

How We Combat It: Our members know the importance of balance. Whether it’s through a structured rest day or a fun, low-intensity hike with friends, the goal is to stay active in a way that’s sustainable. Plus, when you’ve got accountability partners cheering you on, it’s easier to show up for the next workout—without burning out.

Myth #3: “You can out-exercise a bad diet.”

The Truth: Nutrition is the foundation of fitness, and ultra-processed holiday snacks won’t fuel your best efforts in the gym. A balanced, whole-foods-based approach is the key to feeling good and performing well.

How We Combat It: One of the benefits of being part of the BattleGrounds community is the shared knowledge. Swap recipes, join meal prep challenges (coming in 2025!), or simply talk with your coach about strategies for making better choices. If you feel like making some major changes this year in your diet, we’ve got a nutrition coach! This time of year, it’s less about perfection and more about keeping it simple—lean proteins, lots of veggies, and enough water to stay hydrated.

Shifting the Focus

The holiday season is often treated as a free-for-all, followed by a desperate sprint to set New Year’s resolutions. But real success lies in consistency over time. Instead of focusing on what’s lost or gained in a few weeks, think about the patterns you’ve built over the year.

At BattleGrounds, we’ve seen how powerful it is when members show up for one another. Accountability is what turns fitness from an obligation into a way of life. It’s easier to stick to your goals when you know someone’s got your back, whether it’s your workout buddy texting you to meet at the gym or a coach noticing you’ve been missing classes and checking in. That’s the real magic of what we do here—we’re not just a gym; we’re a community.

Ending the Year Strong

So, what’s the takeaway? This season, don’t sweat the small stuff. Enjoy your holiday traditions, but keep your eyes on the bigger picture. Join us for a class and lean into the camaraderie that makes BGF special. Remember, the habits you’ve built over the past year(s)—and the ones you’ll continue to build—are what truly matter.

Let’s finish this year strong and start the next one even stronger, together. Congrats to everyone that’s completed the 50 and 100 WOD challenges this year. Now, that is FINISHING STRONG!!!
